Nmap (Network Mapper) is a network scanner created by Gordon Lyon (also known by his pseudonym Fyodor Vaskovich). [4] Nmap is used to discover hosts and services on a computer network by sending packets and analyzing the responses.

Nmap has a lot of features, but getting started is as easy as running nmap scanme.nmap.org. Running nmap without any parameters will give a helpful list of the most common options, which are discussed in depth in the man page.
