Rio Tinto has said it has voluntarily released preliminary drafts of environmental impact assessment studies for its lithium mining project Jadar in Serbia to allow the public to assess the potential environmental impacts and mitigation measures.

The Jadar deposit located in Eastern Serbia contains high-quality boron and lithium, and has the potential to support long-term production and supply lithium for decades. The Jadar Project is managed by our subsidiary, Rio Sava Exploration d.o.o.

Mining giant Rio Tinto denies activists’ claims of plans to relocate one hundred thousand people from the Jadar Valley. The company states that it is ready to publish the draft study on the impact of the lithium mine on the environment. The study lists numerous risks but none of the apocalyptic ones mentioned by the mine opponents.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection of Serbia has issued a resolution defining the scope and content of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study for the mining component of Rio Tinto ’s “Jadar” project.

This request represents the first step in the EIA process, according to RERI, and the resolution on the scope and content of the document is necessary for Rio Tinto to obtain approval for the mining field.

Rio Tinto is currently working to secure approval for an updated environmental impact assessment (EIA) study and obtain key permits, including an exploitation license, to advance its Jadar lithium project in western Serbia, according to Jadar project CEO Chad Bluitt in an interview with SynNews.
