Avebury (/ ˈeɪvbəri /) is a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, in south-west England. One of the best-known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest megalithic stone circle in the world.

Recognised as a World Heritage Site for its outstanding Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments, Avebury stone circles and henge are full of traces of our ancient past. The surrounding landscape also includes including a stone-lined avenue and the largest artificial mound in Europe.

Like Stonehenge, Neolithic peoples constructed Avebury between around 2850 BC and 2200 BC. The site’s centerpiece is the Avebury henge and its stone circles, which includes the largest stone henge in Britain. However, the ritual landscape extends far beyond this central complex.

Avebury henge and stone circles are one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain. Built and much altered during the Neolithic period, roughly between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, the henge survives as a huge circular bank and ditch, encircling an area that includes part of Avebury village.

Avebury Manor, Wiltshire, sits quietly on the edge of the largest prehistoric stone circle in the world. Built in the 16th century on the site of a 12th-century Benedictine Priory, the house is a remarkable survivor, enduring over five hundred years of changing owners and residents.

The Avebury complex is one of the principal ceremonial sites of Neolithic Britain that we can visit today. It was built and altered over many centuries from about 2850 BC until about 2200 BC and is one of the largest, and undoubtedly the most complex, of Britain's surviving Neolithic henge monuments.
