Maryland was among the four divided border states during the American Civil War (1861–1865), with most Marylanders fighting for the Union Army, along with a large number for the Confederacy. As a border state, it officially remained in the Union throughout the war.

The State of Maryland is located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Maryland is bordered by Pennsylvania in the north, by Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C. in the west and south, and by Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean in the east.

Maryland is known as the "Old Line State," named after the Maryland Line, a regiment that fought in the American Revolution. Maryland surrounds most of the Chesapeake Bay, and the state is known for its Crabs and Crab Cakes.
