Because of imprecise cartography and unclear language defining the boundaries in the 1783 Treaty of Paris, the British retained control of Detroit and Michigan after the American Revolution. When Quebec split into Lower and Upper Canada in 1791, Michigan was part of Kent County, Upper Canada.

Michigan, constituent state of the U.S. It is split into two large land segments: the sparsely populated Upper Peninsula and the mitten-shaped Lower Peninsula. The Upper Peninsula shares a southwestern border with Wisconsin, while the Lower Peninsula is bordered to the south by Indiana and Ohio.

Michigan is located in the East North Central region of the United States. The state consists of two peninsulas and borders four of five Great Lakes: Michigan, Erie, Huron, and Superior.

In 1802, when Ohio was admitted to the Union, the whole of Michigan was attached to the Territory of Indiana, and so remained until 1805, when the Territory of Michigan was established.
