Hauptort Amelands ist Nes mit zahlreichen Einkaufsmöglichkeiten. Die Insel liegt nördlich von Holwert vor der niederländischen Küste. Benachbarte Inseln sind nach Osten Schiermonnikoog sowie nach Westen Terschelling. Die westfriesischen Inseln entstanden vor etwa 10.000 Jahren.
