The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCM) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing relief to its most vulnerable residents with the launch of an intensified Indigent Registration Campaign.

Since 2016, BCM has spent an amount of R1.7 Billion on registered indigent consumers. Subsidized households are those that have a total income equal to or less than R3,600 per month, and whose account holder is staying in the house and not owning more than one fixed property.

Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has targeted its indigent households through the socio-economic information and performance indicators contained in the IDP, local economic development initiatives and its other poverty relief programmes.

Under this policy, municipalities are required to identify indigent households that would receive services such as water, electricity, sanitation, and refuse. Households are required to register with municipalities to qualify for free basic services.

The purpose of the campaign is to assist consumers who are still having unresolved queries on billing, opening new accounts, assistance with debt incentive scheme application and also with the indigent registration applications.
