We will be leaving the country for 9 months, and plan to leave a car (actually a pick-up truck) in the garage. Should the truck be put “on blocks,” and how do you do this?

The majority of car engines are all aluminum (aluminum heads and block), it’s a very common thing these days. The Corolla has had aluminum blocks and heads for the gas/petrol models for the past twenty years.

When I store my car for the winter I park so that the tires are directly on the concrete. Jim says that he heard once that when your tires are on concrete for a long time something in the concrete is bad for the tires causing them to become damaged. So, putting the tires on a piece of plywood creates a barrier and saves the tires.

Here is a picture from the other side of the car- this one is a little better: I know nothing about cars. And I have so many obligations which require driving this weekend… Was hoping this is something I can wait until Monday to bring into the shop… and I don’t know anyone who knows crap about cars.

My wife says I should put my project car up on blocks to keep the tires from rotting (this is a long-term project). Comments?

Someone please explain why one of our ‘Snowbirds’ would go to all the trouble to jack up a car to get the tires off a concrete driveway, only to place it on four concrete blocks? We live in a retierment community in SW Florida and I’m guessing the owner is from Michigan or Canada.

It would be better if someone you know could drive the car once a week for about an hour. Putting it on blocks is mainly so that the tires don’t get dry-rotted and start to crack, which wouldn’t be an issue if it can still be driven.

Regarding cinder blocks - recent Car and Driver had an article on bleeding brakes - guess what they showed as a way to hold up the car - CINDER BLOCKS! Even worse, they showed them being used in the worst possible way, with the car resting on the center of a block on its end, just about the weakest possible way to use it.
