Castleisland was the centre of Desmond power in Kerry. The village got its name, 'Castle of the Island of Kerry', from a castle built in 1226 by Geoffrey Maurice (or de Marisco).

From 1925- 1945 a Secondary Top operated within the Primary School System. It was decided to open a full Secondary School in September 1945 and Sr. Marie Therese Scanlon was appointed Principal. Owing to war restrictions, a new building could not be undertaken.

St Pats is a school dedicated to providing a holistic education and developing strong personal, academic, sporting, and social growth in each student.

Our school is under the trusteeship of CEIST (Catholic Education, an Irish Schools Trust). The CEIST trusteeship caters for Catholic Schools of five religious congregations including the Presentation Order.

Coláiste an Oileáin, St. Patrick’s Secondary School for boys was opened in the Carnegie Library, Castleisland in September 1939 by Seán Prendiville.

Am Landesinstitut für Schulqualität und Lehrerbildung des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt (LISA) haben insgesamt 22 Fachlehrplankommissionen ihre Arbeit aufgenommen. Sie überarbeiten die aktuell gültigen Fachlehrpläne der Schulform Sekundarschule.
