Since 1922, when he began to paint, Hans Hartung has been working to make art into an instrument capable of directly recording his inner experiences. His unwavering purpose has been controlled improvisation, undisturbed by objects.

Hans Hartung was a French-German artist known for his lyrical abstractions and involvement in the Art Informel movement. Hartung’s idiosyncratic paintings and lithographs were created with distinctive swirls, scribbles, and hatch marks, he made by scratching, erasing, and reapplying pigment.

Hans Hartung is one of the most important protagonists of abstract art. Since the 1950s Hartung became one of the most influential figures of the Ècole de Paris and the most influential "German" artist.

The thoughtful, calculated dimension of his approach partly contradicts the image of a gestural and spontaneous painter that is often associated with Hartung. During the same period, Hartung discovered Paris, drawn by the avant-garde movements, and eventually settled there permanently in 1935.
