A major incident had been declared in Shropshire following reports of a sinkhole affecting a canal in the Chemistry area of Whitchurch. Emergency services are currently on scene, and a multi-agency response has been set up, co-ordinated through the Shropshire Tactical Co-ordination Group (TCG).

In December 2025, a breach near Whitchurch caused significant damage to the historic Llangollen Canal. Keep up to date on the repair works we are undertaking. Work to reprofile and reinstate the flooded field is progressing well.

The Whitchurch Arm was built by the Ellesmere Canal Company and opened in stages between 1808 and 1811. Its use had ceased in the 1930s, and it was formally abandoned, along with the Llangollen Canal, in 1944.
