The river gave its name to the departments of Haute-Marne, Marne, Seine-et-Marne, and Val-de-Marne. The Marne starts in the Langres plateau, runs generally north then bends west between Saint-Dizier and Châlons-en-Champagne, joining the Seine at Charenton just upstream from Paris.

The lower Seine system is connected with that of the Rhine by way of the Marne, and the Oise links it with the waterways of Belgium. The links with the Loire waterway and with the Saône-Rhône, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries when connecting canals were built, are now of minor importance.

The best champagne comes from vineyards along the Marne River from Château-Thierry eastward to Épernay and on the plain from Épernay stretching north to Reims, which is dominated by a hill called the Montagne de Reims.
