A client has asked me if they can run mutiple limited companies through a single Xero account. The companies are all in one corporate group, and they have suggested that 'departments' can be used to label transactions for each company, and then a trial balance can be run at year end for each company ...

Xero's demo company contains fictional data so you can try out Xero immediately, without having to add your own organisation and enter your own data. It has almost all the features of an actual Xero organisation, except for automatic bank feeds and the ability to invite other users. To use the demo company, you just need a Xero login.

To file MTD through Xero you have two options. Either get authority from the client in the usual way on your Agent account and then connect your own Xero login to your Gateway log in to file VAT on their behalf. Or, invite the client to use Xero and then they can file the VAT returns themselves using their own Gateway.

What's next? Anyone who logs in to Xero and has access to a paying subscription is prompted to set up multi-factor authentication.

By 10.15am, AccountingWEB member Arthur Putey had alerted other accountants in an Any Answers post, Xero users unable to login. Those using the Xero app still had to access the system and users who were already logged in were not affected – unless they were automatically logged out after a period of inactivity such as a 30-min lunch break.
