Reproductive rights and women's rights have been raised globally, with some countries denying some of those rights to women. Violence against women is primarily committed by men. Many religions and governments stipulate certain rules for women. Feminist movements aim to achieve gender equality.

Granted by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Turkish women gained women's suffrage before women in many European countries such as France, Italy and Greece. There still remained, however, a large discrepancy between formal rights and the social position of women.

Women usually have less hair on their faces and bodies than men. After they finished puberty, and before menopause, women are usually able to get pregnant and give birth to babies.

UN Women is the global champion for gender equality, working to develop and uphold standards and create an environment in which every woman and girl can exercise her human rights and live up to her full potential.
